As I was wandering amid the many booths and shops full of promotional MLB merchandise, I passed a table where autographs were being signed by three baseball legends: Rollie Fingers, Gaylord Perry, and Steve Garvey.
The cost for an autographed baseball was $20.00. Rawlings had donated the baseballs because every cent of the $20.00 was donated to Children's Hospital. If you wanted a photograph of yourself with one of these baseball legends, they threw it in for free for the cost of an autographed ball.
As I was working my own booth, trying to sell books, a young man in his early 30s came bounding up with his best friend and and said friend's little girl, who looked to be about five years old. The first man had gotten a ball autographed by all three ballplayers--Fingers, Perry, and Garvey--and gotten a photo of himself with the three of them. He could not contain his glee, and he stood in front of my booth staring at the photo, grinning like a Cheshire cat.
